JJIE examines the national juvenile solitary confinement problem

The Juvenile Justice Information Exchange has released a new piece chronicling the widespread, inhumane treatment of juveniles who are subjected to solitary confinement, and the panoply of problems the practice brings about.

“Juvenile Solitary Confinement: Modern-Day ‘Torture’ in the US” casts a wide net, but spends much of the investigation looking at California, home to the nation’s largest juvenile justice and incarceration system. Among the findings detailed in the article are what advocates for ending solitary confinement for kids have long known: “experts say the practice causes irreparable psychological and developmental harm to youths.”

Aside from this latest piece, the JJIE has a variety of excellent stories, research and more dealing with the multifaceted problems around juvenile justice. Go to the JJIE resource hub for more information.
