“At the end of the day, the most overwhelming key to a child’s success is the positive involvement of parents.” – Jane D. Hull
Families can make a difference! It might seem that the factors that shape your child’s school experience and future success are overwhelming and beyond your control. However, parental involvement can significantly combat these factors. Parents can make a difference in their children’s lives by being positive role models, being engaged with their school work and reading to them.
There is even more you can do. If you think a school has policies in place that you don’t agree with, are unfair and negatively impact children at the school, you have the right to speak up. Join the PTA/PTO at your school to make your voice heard and to harness the power of multiple parents when there are certain issues you want to address.
Being engaged in your child’s life and with the school and community provides the opportunity and power needed to break the school-to-prison pipeline.
It’s Easy to Start a PTA
If your school doesn’t already have one, you can start your own PTA. To find out more about what PTA can offer you and your school or district, or for step-by-step instructions for starting a PTA, please contact PTA headquarters at (800) 307-4PTA (4782) or e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org.
